Rockingham Castle

1hr 48mins from Heathrow Airport

We drove in even though a sign said closed and Elton ran in and the lady behind the counter told us we could quickly take a photo and leave but I got caught and a man came running out and told us we couldn’t take photos as it is a private lodge and we should come back later and pay to visit it, but I got talking with him and he ended up being very friendly and wouldn’t shutup! We wanted to leave but he just kept on talking! He lived in Sydney for a while and we chatted about life there and where else he used to work, finally we left.

Rockingham Castle stands on an area that has been in use during the Iron Age, Roman period and by Saxon tribes.

Rockingham Castle is a former royal castle and hunting lodge in Rockingham Forest.

It has an amazing view of the Welland Valley as it is positioned on elevated ground

After the Norman Invasion in the 11th c. a motte and bailey castle was built here on the orders of William the Conqueror. This castle was mainly used as a royal hunting retreat because Rockingham Forest was well known for its wild boar but the castle went into disrepair and was bought by Edward Watson in the 15th c. and is now the home of the Saunders Watson family.
